Dead Plant Society

Little Chefs

We believe anyone can garden! The Dead Plant Society offers seasonal workshops to get you growing. You can expect to get your hands dirty practicing garden skills like composting, transplanting and seed saving. Workshops are offered February through November each year and suited for adult-learners.

We believe in seed to table education! This series of parent-child cooking workshops aims to improve family meal time through hands-on and tasty activities. Come and harvest farm fresh, seasonal produce, learn a new recipe and cook it together.

The Big Red Kitchen

Finally, a cooking series for adults! We believe anyone can cook, and "yes chef" we can make it fun too. The Big Red Kitchen cooking series invites singles, couples, parents and friends to the farm to share in an incredible seed-to-table meal with local drink pairings.

Tomatoes 101

As the weather warms up, we start dreaming of summer's most delicious bounty, TOMATOES!  A classic crop, tomatoes can be tricky to seed, grow and fruit in our high desert climate. In this workshop, we'll dive into all the nuances of growing this special red fruit including top varieties for Northern Nevada, frost protection, fertilization and fruiting. Everyone will go home with tomato seedlings to prepare for the snow melting off Peavine and getting your garden off to a great start!

Little Chefs: PreK & 5-13 years

Little Chefs is our parent-child cooking series hosted by Urban Roots . This Fall's series is for pre-K chefs (ages 2-4 years) and ages 5-13 years on the same Saturday! We will split into age appropriate groups on the day of. These workshops are hands-on, include a tasty recipe and snack, and a farm fresh ingredient to take home.  â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

April - CHOP, Slice & Dice It: Veggie Burgers

Let's level up your little chef's skills in the kitchen! In this workshop we'll dive right into knife skills by slicing our way to unbeatable veggie burgers! Urban Roots staff will be your sous chefs as your child thrives in the kitchen.

May - BAKE it til you MAKE it: Berry Crumble

Your little chef will become Star Baker in this month’s workshop! We’ll explore measuring and reading a recipe while we bake berries crumbles with sugar smart ingredients. Urban Roots staff will guide you through this recipe, offering helpful tips for reducing sugar in desserts.
