Dead Plant Society
Little Chefs
We believe anyone can garden! The Dead Plant Society offers seasonal workshops to get you growing. You can expect to get your hands dirty practicing garden skills like composting, transplanting and seed saving. Workshops are offered February through November each year and suited for adult-learners.
We believe in seed to table education! This series of parent-child cooking workshops aims to improve family meal time through hands-on and tasty activities. Come and harvest farm fresh, seasonal produce, learn a new recipe and cook it together. A registered pediatric dietician will also be available to answer any nutrition questions you might have.

Garlic Planting & Pickling
Late fall is the time for planting garlic in our region! Garlic is easy to grow and special because it's one of the first plants to sprout in the spring. This workshop will focus on which varieties grow well here, how to plant, care for and dry garlic through its whole life cycle, AND we will even quick pickle a jar of cloves to take home. Katie Colling and Cindy Gallimore from Soil Solidarity will teach this workshop and share knowledge on healthy soils, planting garlic and building community through gardening. Each participant will go home with their own pickled garlic and garlic to plant. One lucky Dead Plant Society raffle winner will take home a special garden tool!

Planning Your Home Garden
New to gardening? Not sure what to grow or when to start? Winter is the perfect time to start planning your spring & summer garden and Urban Roots has you covered! In this workshop we'll dive into the basics of planning out your garden, paying special attention to seed selection, soil health, and which plants grow well together. Everyone will go home with seeds to start growing.
Planning Your School Garden
Are you a teacher in Northern Nevada? Do you want to start a garden or garden club at your school? This workshop is designed just for you and will cover the process of submitting a garden proposal, designing and building a school garden and how to fund it. Special guest instructors from Jessie Beck Elementary will walk you through maintaining a school garden and engaging your students and community. Everyone will go home with seeds to start growing.
**This workshop counts for 4 hours of OPAL Professional Development time for teachers and lunch is included

Starting Seeds Indoors
Whether you have a full backyard or an apartment balcony, growing your own seedlings for fresh herbs, fruits, or vegetables can be fun and "dirt cheap"! In this workshop we'll share the basics of starting spring and summer seedlings indoors including materials needed, correct temperature, planning and watering. One lucky Dead Plant Society attendee will go home with a complete indoor-gardening set up including heating mat, soil, seeds, spray bottle and grow light.

Native & Perennial Plants
Perennial and native plants add color, wildlife habitat and food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. They can also help protect your fruits and veggies from insects and regenerate the soil. In this workshop we'll cover how to select plants for your garden, how to maintain them, as well as how to turn your space into a full fledged food forest that yields food year round. Everyone will go home with a perennial plant, and one lucky Dead Plant Society attendee will take home one of our favorite books "Gaia's Garden".

Beekeeping 101
This is year 4 of Urban Roots keeping bees onsite at our farm and at our community partner's garden, Northern Nevada HOPE Springs. We've learned SO much as beginning beekeepers and are excited to share our knowledge in an accessible, and hands on environment. In this "Intro to Beekeeping" workshop we'll cover the makeup of a hive, necessary equipment, and how to sustain your beehive through the winter. We will even conduct a hive check, walking you through all the steps. Everyone will go home with beekeeping resources galore, and one lucky Dead Plant Society attendee will leave with hives boxes!

Little Chefs is our parent-child cooking series hosted by Urban Roots and registered dietitian Anastasia Gavrilets. This Fall's series is for pre-K chefs (ages 2-4 years) and ages 5-13 years on the same Saturday! We will split into age appropriate groups on the day of. These workshops are hands-on, include a tasty recipe and snack, and a farm fresh ingredient to take home. ​​​

November 16th: BAKE it til you MAKE it: Honey Farm Cake
Your Little Chef will become Star Baker in this month’s workshop! We’ll explore measuring ingredients and following a recipe while we bake delicious (mini or cup)cakes using Urban Roots bees' honey.
Registered dietitian Anastasia and Urban Roots (sous chefs) will share and guide you through this new classic recipe, offering helpful tips for baking with young learners. All Little Chefs will take home seeds to get growing at home, and a farm ingredient they harvest themselves.
